Valentina established her house in 1928. while her daywear was often simple and practical, sometimes displaying peasant influences, she was best known for her dramatic evening wear and swirling capes. she was also a skilled designer of millinery, especially snoods, turbans and ceils.
Schlee dressed such actresses of the era as Lynn Fontanne, Katharine Cornell, Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Gertrude Lawrence, and Katharine Hepburn. Her Broadway successes included the costumes for the stage version of The Philadelphia Story.
